E3 2005: Dan & Marcus’ E3 Journal (Updated Throughout The Conference)

By Dan Blomberg on May 17th, 2005

Welcome to the journal for both Dan and Marcus from E3 2005 in Los Angeles, CA, USA. I’ve broken it into updates in reverse chronological order.

May 18th 9:49pm PST - Dan
So much for updating from the conference. One line sums it up pretty well: "A line for everything and power for nothing." All morning there plenty of lines and absolutely no power to major portions of the convention center including the media are (where internet is). We made due though and ended up visiting plenty of companies in the halls with power and playing a few games. Pictures were taken and have been posted here.

This morning we also got the media briefing from ESA’s president (ESA puts on E3). He put some things very interestingly, including something the game industry does which drives away newcomers. "We’re the only industry that makes you buy a game and then buy a 200pg book to finish it." That is a good point, too bad only media were in the room not developers.

All in all it was a very long day. Look for more media for games as well as previews tomorrow.

Today Marcus and I (along with Dave and AJ) visited the E3 conference center. After leaving at 1am from Phoenix and dealing with LA traffic we finally reached the conference center around 9am. After meeting up with Dave and AJ and getting our media passes we decided to go to part of the MIT lecture on education and gaming. We listened to keynote speaker Peter Molyneux from Lionhead talk about his thoughts on education and gaming and Marcus even asked a question (check out his article on the whole thing).

After the lecture we browsed around E3 and took a lot of pictures, which we’ve uploaded for your viewing pleasure here. These include pictures of many buildboards and a few sneak shots of them setting up the conference center. You can even see Marcus by the batmobile. After that we left and walked around downtown LA.

We now know exactly where to be for everything thats going on tomorrow including our many meetings. Be sure to check this log then.
