Diary of Rants and Raves: 50 Cent: Bulletproof is everything that’s wrong with the industry

By Elias Dounis on January 25th, 2006

There are movements being made in the videogame industry to promote original gameplay ideas and concepts but even while the most established companies in the industry try to move the industry forward, companies like Vivendi Universal Games attempt to make a mockery out of the industry and its fans with games such as 50 Cent: Bulletproof.

It was announced earlier today that VU Games’ 50 Cent: Bulletproof has sold through one million units in between North American and European territories, and I just couldn’t help but be disgusted by the game’s success. It has generally been accepted that Bulletproof is one terribly mediocre action game, receiving some rather abysmal scores across the board from all outlets of game reviewing. The game is the result of a collaboration between a fairly large third party publisher and a rapper with a speech impediment whose sole desire to leech money from consumers. Never did it ever seem like the game had been developed to provide a truly great gaming experience that gamers would enjoy, and perhaps that is the problem.

Games like 50 Cent: Bulletproof are very common in the industry. These games are created only for the selfish intentions of money hungry corporations and individuals. Rarely, if ever, are these games created for gamers themselves and it’s a shame that Bulletproof has sold so well. I blame the casual consumer for the game’s success and the fan’s of 50 Cent’s music. There are no substance to the lyrics of his songs and it’s an even greater shame that so many individuals have fallen prey to this shit. What’s even worse is that there’s likely a sequel to Bulletproof in the planning stages.

I have to be thankful about some things, however. It seems that many developers have taken note of the franchise whoring that is being exploited by North American game publishers and innovative and unique games such as Shadow of the Colossus are starting to make an appearance on a more frequent basis. Hopefully, casual gamers will begin to take notice of such gems and flush games like Bulletproof down the shitter, where they belong.

Don’t like what I have to say? Well, go write a rap song about it. Oh, and make sure you include the standard gunshot sound effect and weed references... once you’ve done that you’ve got a potential million dollar single in your hands. Need not worry -- the lyrics don’t even have to be coherent.
