Introduction

The year is 1942, America is at war with the world. Your role is commander of a fleet of destroyers. If hunting Sub’s and shooting down enemy aircraft is your bag. Ubi Soft has something for you. However, If your the average Fluffy chair computer game freak, you may not notice the time and effort put into this overall well crafted simulation.

Presentation

The game is indeed more of a simulation than actually a game. You take control of a ship, and either give the orders or get into the action via the different parts of the ship. For me, the typical action gamer, I found myself going into the game turning up as much heat as I could and manning the AA Guns until the ship sinks. But then again thats just me. The menu’s are well laid out and easy to reach, My only gripe is how the navagation buttons are always hidden. Overall everything is well done and eazy to get to.

Graphics & Sound

Graphically this game isn’t really amazing, but its not poor either. The ships are fairly detailed and the motion gives you the feeling of actually being at sea. However, The water could have had more time put into it. Afterall it is the most important factor of the game. Is it not? The sounds really shocked me. True 3d sounds really put you into the action. Perhaps its my speakers but I could actually tell where the shots were coming from. Pretty impressive for a PC game.

Gameplay

Online multi-player was a big plus for me. The ability to hunt down the subs from Silent Hunter II is very appealing. A real life online cat and mouse. There are several actions for you to use in Destroyer Command. You may choose to delegate orders from above or jump into the gunner’s seat and pour 40mm lead into the strafing planes. Other weapons at your disposal should include the 5-inch, 38 cal. guns, 40mm & 20mm AA, MK 14 torpedoes, and every U-boat commander’s nightmare, the depth charge. Among the other features Destroyer Command features a scenario editor allowing you to script your very own missions. As well as a 3d angle for you to view your vessile from the outside. As a simulation DC has it all

Lasting Appeal

I have long been fascinated with everything WWII. I loved learning about it in history and I still love watching those "boring" educational videos about the war. Normally I consider myself a WWII Avation expert, but taking a look at the roll the navy played during WWII through my computer screen was a completly new experiance. However, the game is far from perfect. It has a very steep learning curve, and will likely bore players to death before they get a hang of it. As my personaly reccomendation, I would give the game a try, just make sure to read the dang instruction booklet. Ok?

Conclusion

One thing is for sure this aint no Prettied up battle ship, Well ok it is, but its far more complicated and deeply involved. Its your role to save the world from the grasp of the axis. Destroyer command is a game that will keep the enthusiast busy for quite some time.
