He’s saved the mushroom kingdom countless times; defeated Bowser by almost as many. He’s even rescued a sun bleached muck-ridden island from environmental disaster, restoring it to it’s former tropical paradise. He’s done it all and let’s face it -- he deserves a little more than a kiss from Princess Peach by now.

But none of that matters when the universe itself lies in peril. Apparently Bowser has bigger fish to fry than the denizens of a small truffle-themed village, as we all know from the previous events in Mario Galaxy. In that 2007 hit, Bowser kidnapped Peach once again and Mario for the first time took to the stars to collect his venerable starman powerup.

And he’s about to do it all again in his brand new cosmic quest, Super Mario Galaxy 2.

It wasn’t just the shocking change of setting in Mario Galaxy that made it an instant classic, it was the subtle attention to details in level design and scenario. There was just so much to do: everything from hopping across planets, to dismantling giant toy robots, climbing massive honeycombs as a bee, even literally turning gravity on its heels to experience the world upside down, right ways left ways... it didn’t matter. If that sounds kinda like Mario on crack, it’s cuz it was.

And it was brilliant. Nonstop fun every moment, every place -- never dull. To think that we’re about to revisit a brand new Galaxy with these amazing mechanics along with whole new ones shown like a drill maneuver and freezing entire lakes solid with ice, is just too good to be true. But the icing on the cake is that you’re not alone this time.

One word: Yoshi!

Yes, Mario’s just not quite complete without his saddled-up dinosaur pal along for the ride, and he’s no gimmick here. From early, albeit polished, footage we can see that Yoshi plays a very integral part to the various dreamlike worlds the little plumber will explore. Yoshi can even use his tongue to latch onto things and swing.

To say we’re excited about this is an understatement, but we’ll have to wait awhile longer for Super Mario Galaxy 2 to launch into orbit until "sometime 2010."

Stay with us for the enticing developments as they land.
