THQ to Buy out Midway?
June 27th, 2001 (12:00am) - Sources inside Midway have told Gaming Age that THQ is planning to buy out Midway. Since the Arcade division is no more, this of course means the console division, focused on XBox, GameCube and PlayStation 2. THQ desperately wants to increase its sports line-up, in hopes of becoming a major player like Sega and EA. Midway Chicago currently has four sports games in the works by the same teams responsible for the NFL Blitz and NBA Showtime arcade games. These games look quite promising, and could be just what THQ wants. This deal has been in the planning stages for the past few months, as shown with the recent news of the Arcade division of Midway being cut as part of the restructuring. The formal announcement is planned for Monday, along with more news on the situation Source: Gaming Age Reported by Kyle Johnson on June 27th, 2001 (12:00am)
