Square to announce GameCube & Xbox Support?

September 24th, 2001 (12:00am) - It’s almost that time again. Time for the fall Tokyo Games Show. While Square hasn’t had a whole lot to dish out to the media in recent months, with Final Fantasy X’s Japanese release now past, rumors are flying about TGS.

We’ve received a report, and had that report backed up by a second party, that Square will be making an annoncement at the Tokyo Games Show announcing full support for both Nintendo and Microsoft’s new consoles.

There were several rumors that a press conference would occur today in which Square would announce it’s full support for Game Cube. Other rumors, said that Square would be annoucing that the re-makes of Final Fantasy 7-9 would be Game Cube exclusive.

While we can’t confirm any of the rumors about Square’s involvment with other consoles, we have been told by SquareGamer.com that a press conference did occur today. The purpose of this press conference was to inform the media that Square would make an official announcement regarding X-Box and Game Cube at TGS.

Everything is just rumors at this point, but this announcement could change the tide further in favor of the underdogs in this console war. With Capcom’s annoucement that the Biohazard (Resident Evil here) series would now be Game Cube exclusive, Sony is slowly losing it’s exclusive cards. It’s a very interesting time to be into gaming, and the next year should be an uphill battle for Nintendo to prove itself in the console market again.

It’s hard to imagine the thought of Square gaming on a Nintendo console again. Imagine the irony if a Final Fantasy VII remake became a Game Cube exclusive. The game that Square jumped ship to Sony so they could make, and had millions of dollars pumped into marketing by Sony, would now be on a Nintendo console. I can see Sony Computer Entertainment executives heading to the liquor store now.
