No Violent Video Games Law

October 31st, 2001 (12:00am) - Without comment, the US Supreme Court upheld an earlier US Circuit Court of Appeals decision to curb the enforcement of an Indianapolis law designed to keep minors from playing violent and mature-themed video games without the consent of a parent (Kendrick v. American Amusement Machine Association, 01-329). The US Supreme Court rejected an appeal over the city’s video game law.

The law would have required that arcade operators keep these type of games ten feet away from non-violent games and behind curtains or face a $200 fine a day for each violation. The law also called for conspicuous signage alerting patrons to the nature of those games. Games that fall into the "behind the curtain" category depict graphic violence or strong sexual content.

US Circuit Court of Appeals had struck down the law concluding that it violated free-speech rights.
