Square and Enix on the Xbox?
January 18th, 2002 (12:00am) - Few developers can reach the level of success in their native land of Japan as Square and Enix. Indeed, they are both internationally known developers, Square more so. It should come as no surprise that Microsoft is courting them both. Square, known for its best-selling Final Fantasy series, confirmed that the company is in talks with Microsoft. Spokesperson Hideki Tsuchiya, sounding non-committal, stated, "Our company policy is to produce game titles for the game consoles that are hitting the jackpot, and we have nothing set about Xbox game development." However Tsuchiya added that the Xboxs built-in broadband capability does make it an appealing platform. Square will launch its first online multiplayer Final Fantasy title in Japan this spring for the Playstation 2. Enixs Tatsuo Tomiyama, an administration director for the company, also confirmed being in talks with Microsoft. Tomiyama said, "Weve talked about making games for Xbox, but we are not planning to make Dragon Quest series for that machine as the games target player differs from those that Xbox targets. Its going to be something different, even if we decide to make something for them (Xbox)." Reported by Michael Robinson on January 18th, 2002 (12:00am) [From: ConsoleWire]
