PlayStation 2 Lands in Korea

February 28th, 2002 (12:00am) - 12:07am 02/27/02

While Microsoft’s Xbox dominated headlines in Japan last week, Sony was quietly delivering their PlayStation 2 in another Asian territory, South Korea. Sony subsidiary SCEK (Sony Computer Entertainment Korea) delivered the PlayStation 2 to retailers on February 22nd for 358,000 won (2). To commemorate the launch, Sony invited several celebrities and television personalities to participate in a playtest outside Lotte, a major retailer in the region. According to Sony representatives, approximately 150,000 units were shipped to retailers for launch. For the year, SCEK hopes to sell 1 million PlayStation 2 units within the Sourth Korean market. While preliminary sales figures remain undisclosed, some retailers were disappointed with the launch. Specifically, memory cards and other peripherals were in short supply for launch. According to one report, SCEK only shipped 70,000 memory cards, half the number of consoles, due to shortages with suppliers in Japan. Below are a handful of pictures taken during the launch last weekend, our thanks to Tsuno Okashi and G-mecca.
