Sony, Microsoft Wrangle in Germany
March 19th, 2002 (12:00am) -
While this years CeBIT Expo in Germany was expected to highlight the latest in network technology, Sonys PlayStation 2 made an unexpected appearance on the show floor. Seemingly, Sony decided to show the Linux capabilities of the PlayStation 2 and offer attendees the opportunity to test-drive several network compatible games including Tony Hawks Pro Skater 3. Microsoft however, which was displaying strictly handheld and PC-related products, petitioned event organizers to remove the PlayStation 2 exhibit. According to CeBIT representatives, Microsoft argued that Sony broke the rules of the expo by exhibiting game console related products. As a result, CeBIT demanded that Sony remove the exhibit from their booth. Of note however, Sony has exhibited the PlayStation 2 at CeBIT the past three years, although this was the first time they received any complaints. Several local German news outlets have since portrayed Microsoft as a jilted giant, despite the underlying veracity of their argument. This comes on the heels of Microsofts Xbox launch in Europe last week.
