PlayStation 3 and Beyond
March 22nd, 2002 (12:00am) -
Sonys chief technical officer Shinichi Okamoto addressed members of the console gaming community today at the Game Developers Conference, currently being held in San Jose, California. While Okamoto-sans presentation included a variety of topics, he touched upon the PlayStation 3 briefly. Specifically, he reiterated that Sony was jointly developing new processor technology with IBM and Toshiba called Grid, previously code-named CELL. The new processors are expected to revolutionize the networking sector, and according to Okamoto-san, are being considered for inclusion in PlayStation 3. As his promise to the game development community, Okamoto-san said the PlayStation 3 would be 1000 times more powerful than the PS2. In a quip to the PC market, he said the PlayStation 3 would defy traditional theories regarding the semiconductor market, such as Moores Law. Applied to computer processors, Moores law states that the speed and capabilities of semiconductors double every 18 months. Under those guidelines, the expected processing power of the PlayStation 3 should have taken 20 years to develop. He went on to say that networking applications including downloadable software would be integral to Sonys next console. Unfortunately, Okamoto-san refused to comment on when the PlayStation 3 would hit the market. Perhaps most intriguing however, Okamoto-san did shed some light on the long-term possibilities of the PlayStation brand. In his own words, "the real challenge will come with PlayStation 6 or 7, which will incorporate bio-tech processing."
Bio-tech processing? Either Sony Corp. is becoming quite the technological innovator, or someone needs to hide the peacepipe. Reported by Michael Robinson on March 22nd, 2002 (12:00am) [From: XenGamers]
