June 19th, 2002 (12:00am) - "LOS ANGELES, June 19 (Reuters) - "Spider-Man" swung past competitors to dominate the U.S. video game sales charts for the second straight month in May, data released on Wednesday showed.
Versions of the game, based on the comic-book franchise, came in at Nos. 1, 7, 9, 11 and 17 for the month, according to market research service NPDFunworld.
The games were published by Activision Inc. (NasdaqNM:ATVI - News), which raised its guidance for fiscal 2003 in early May, based in part on the early success of the "Spider-Man" franchise. Three of the five games were new versions for the latest generation of video game consoles, while one was for Nintendo Co. Ltd.s (7974.OS) handheld Game Boy Advance and the fifth was published in mid-2000 for Sony Corp.s (Tokyo:6758.T - News) older PlayStation console.
Of the three new versions, the best-seller was the versionfor Sonys newer PlayStation 2 console, followed by the versionfor Microsoft Corp.s (NasdaqNM:MSFT - News) Xbox and Nintendos GameCube.
Slipping to No. 3 for the month was Take-Two InteractiveSoftware Inc.s (NasdaqNM:TTWO - News) "Grand Theft Auto 3," which was the best-selling game in the country for four months.
In total, PS2 had eight games on the list, followed by theGame Boy Advance with four, the Xbox and GameCube with three each and the PlayStation with two.
The top publisher in the month was Activision, with thefive "Spider-Man" games, followed by Sony Computer Entertainment of America with three titles.
Six titles entered the top 20 for April, including two inthe top 10, the highest at No. 2.The top 10 games for the month of May, based on units sold, according to NPDFunworld"
