Microsoft to Sell New Video-Game Console in 2006, Nikkei Says

June 25th, 2002 (12:00am) -
Tokyo, June 25 (Bloomberg) -- Microsoft Corp, the maker of the Xbox video-game console, will release a new game machine with enhanced internet-access capabilities in 2006, Nikkei English News reported, citing the company’s visiting chief executive officer Steven Ballmer.

The new model would be released close to the next World Cup soccer tournament, the report cited Ballmer as saying in an interview Monday.

Ballmer said Microsoft will use more games software to boost sales of its machines, implying that the company may increase collaboration with software developers, the Nikkei added.

The world’s largest software maker entered the game-console market last November with its Xbox, which it started selling in Japan in February. The Redmond, Washington-based company has had to cut Xbox prices in Japan and Europe to boost sales, which lag behind those of rivals such as Sony Corp.’s PlayStation 2. Tokyo- based Sony controls 80 percent of the home video-game market, the report said.
