Lionhead Studios brings “Unity” to the GameCube…
January 21st, 2003 (12:00am) - Jeff Minter the lead and only designer at Llamasoft games has just gained funding and development support from Peter Molyneaux‘s Lionhead Studios for an exclusive GameCube game tentatively named “Unity”. At the moment details are incredibly sketchy but, “Unity” is a game that came from many ideas Mr. Minter had lying around in his head from early as 1994. According to Minter, Unity will be an abstract shooter very much like Sega’s REZ, with roots clearly coming from another Sega title, Panzer Dragoon. The reason that it has taken so long for the development of this title to begin is because, previously, hardware could not allow Minter to accomplish what he plans to do with Unity, which is make a game involving lightsynths. Minter says that Unity will unlike anything we’ve ever seen before, something unique and something where the boundaries between playing a game and performing an instrument of some kind...are blurred.
Unity is expected to hit cubes in approx. 18 months… My Thoughts:Jeff Minter is a one man wrecking crew. Some development house no matter what they size can’t even pull off a decent gaming attempt, whereas Jeff Minter can do it all on his own. His most recent work Tempest 3000 even scored an incredible 9 out of 10 in EDGE magazine. Most likely not a single person reading this, ever knew about Jeff Minter and Llamasoft, and to tell you the truth neither did I but anyways, I’m excited. It is a game designed for tripped out hippies anyways and that kind of stuff is always fun…If you enjoyed Super Mario Sunshine then this game might just be right up your alley.
