NPD Software/Hardware sales for January
February 18th, 2003 (12:00am) - Hardware/Software sales for January are out, and it looks.. well, looks the same as it has for the past 4 months. Playstation 2 sold 448,000 units in January, a huge drop from the holiday seasons, naturally, but still very very good sales for January. The userbase here in the US is now estimated at over 16 million users.
The XBox also had a good month, selling 164,000 units, which was roughly the same dropoff from the holidays as PS2. Microsoft is increasing it’s lead in the US over the GCN and now has an estimated userbase around 4.7 million users.
GCN was the lowest of traditional consoles, selling 81,000 units, again, basically the same dropoff rate as PS2 and XBox, only a few percentage points more. GCN is in dead last in the US with a userbase of 3.6 million users.
The Game Boy Advance sold 266,000 units, raising its userbase above 12 million units. Here’s the official list of top 25 selling games for January, 2003. Not suprisingly, the PS2 version of The Sims dominated the charts. It is, after all, the most successful PC game of all time. Lets hope the GCN/XBox versions sell well also.
