Japanese console and software sales for the week of 3/30…

April 3rd, 2003 (12:00am) - Today Media Create released the latest sales charts for Japan, here’s the low down.

On the hardware front the GBA SP rained supreme selling a whopping 117,600 pieces for that week, with the Sony’s Playstation 2 in the runner up spot. Sales of the GameCube managed to increase practically twice as much as the previous week selling approximately 22,900 units, which is also the same amount of pieces the standard Game Boy Advance model sold for that week. The decrease in sales of the standard GBA model can be blamed on the release of the GBA SP, but when it all comes down to it, it’s the same machine, meaning the GBA is doing better than ever. Oh for a second there I almost forgot about the Xbox. Well, the Xbox didn’t perform to well at all this week, in fact the Wonder Swan Crystal managed to sell more than Microsoft’s console.

  • Game Boy Advance SP: 117,600 (571,700)

  • Playstation 2: 56,900 (935,500)

  • Game Boy Advance: 22,900 (733,200)

  • GameCube: 22,900 (214,100)

  • Wonder Swan Crystal: 1,390 (17,600)

  • Xbox: 1,300 (47,400)

  • PSOne: 1,200 (31,300)

  • Game Boy Color: 410 (9,400)

  • Wonder Swan Color: 340 (9,900)
  • For software, things tend to follow a similar patter as the hardware charts. Pure domination by Playstation 2 games and GBA titles, with a few GameCube titles here and there. This week Final Fantasy X-2 had finally been dethroned from its top spot, but with nearly 1.8 million copies of the title already sold, I doubt the game has lost much steam. The GameCube only had one game appear in the top ten and that is the anticipated fighter Soul Calibur II, whose sales weren’t too much less than its PS2 counterpart. Due to appearance of Link from Legend of Zelda fame in the game, the GameCube version of Soul Calibur II is expected to sell well.
