Nintendo DS Production to Take Its Toll on Nintendo?

May 18th, 2004 (12:00am) - When speaking to Reuters, Nintendo President Satoru Iwata revealed that the Nintendo DS may cost Nintendo potential capital upon the handheld’s release.

Iwata-san revealed that the dual screen system is presenting a “challenge” to LCD manufacturer Sharp, which could possibly mean a shortage with the supply of the Nintendo DS at launch. In addition, manufacturing costs for the production of the platform are higher than usual, due to the short supply of LCD screens. However, with all this said, Nintendo may not necessarily take any losses because of the DS’ production.

For those who remember, Nintendo has experienced an occurrence like this before with the release of the Nintendo 64 in North America. Initial supply of the console wasn’t enough to satisfy the platform’s initial demand, thus causing many potential buyers to wait a month or two before purchasing the console.
