Acclaim Loses MLB and Turok Licenses
July 6th, 2004 (12:00am) - According to GameIndustry.biz, Acclaim has lost their Major League Baseball and Turok licenses due to “non-payment of royalties due.”
The stripping of the MLB license from Acclaim by the MLBPA means that publisher may no longer use real player and team names in their games, a loss that will hurt Acclaim’s most popular and only truly successful game franchise, All Star Baseball. The loss of the Turok franchise also comes as a big loss. Even though Turok Evolution was considered to be a flop in the game industry, its loss (taken from Acclaim by license owner Classic Media) re-affirms Acclaim poor stance in the industry. During the last gaming generation, the original Turok for the Nintendo 64 actually saved Acclaim from its financial woes at the time.
