Although sponsored by id Software and other industry-leading software and hardware manufacturers, QuakeCon continues to be planned and operated by a dedicated group of 30 year-round volunteers, and nearly 200 on-site volunteers. As originally conceived, QuakeCon remains an event for gamers, by gamers, and enjoys continued success, growing from a small gathering of 150 players in 1996 to more than 4,000 in 2003.
