Nintendo Talks ’Revolution’

February 3rd, 2005 (9:49pm) - In an interview with ITmedia Games, Nintendo of Japan PR Office Manager Toyoda Ken spoke a little bit about Nintendo’s successor to the game GameCube, the "Revolution," in an interview that had mainly been about the Nintendo DS. In typical Nintendo fashion, Ken made some vague statements that fail to answer any one of our many questions regarding Nintendo’s upcoming home console.

Below is an excerpt from the interview, translated by IGN’s Japanese correspondent, "ikachii."

Q: You’ve got quite a number of events coming up this year.

A: At this stage, we are not contemplating any Nintendo-only events, and are first trying to concentrate on what we should do for this year’s E3. Following the upcoming release of the DS in Europe, we are looking to use E3 as a means of generating additional momentum for the platform.

Currently, we are referring to our next-generation console by the codename "Revolution." However, exactly how we will both reveal and market that console is still on the table at this point. I’m sure our competitors are currently facing the same issues as well (laughs).

Q: Are you affected by external influence?

A: I’d be lying if I said I was paying it no mind, but I am not concerning myself with it too much. In the same way that the DS represents a unique answer of ours to the market, the fundamental approach to making things at Nintendo will not change. I also feel it’s safe to say that we are embarking on a different direction than our competitors.

In regards to our next-generation console however, while I’m sure many are waiting to see what kind of curveball Nintendo will throw next, I will say that we have absolutely no intention of approacing our new hardware with the intent of making it an extension of the line of hardware we’ve released up to this point. Currently, we are conceiving methods of effectively conveying this difference in approach to the public, and in the process, conveying the idea of "here’s another way to play [games]."

At any rate, we are still looking at E3 as a launching pad for the "Revolution" platform, and are deliberating if we should feature the actual console, visuals, or simply illustrate the concept behind it. At the same time, while we are aiming to make some form of a positive impression, we also want to avoid giving away too much, and are therefore currently in a dilemma about the situation. What we are sure of, however, is that fun isn’t something that can be expressed in figures, and we are ever mindful of how we can illustrate the difference offered by our particular brand of fun.
