Sony stops production of PSX in Japan
February 24th, 2005 (11:22am) - Sony has revealed, in an announcement posted on the official Japanese home page for the PSX, that reveals that they have currently stopped production of both available PSX models in Japan. The PSX combines the gaming features of the PlayStation 2 with a DVD burner, hard drive video recorder, music player, and a number of other multimedia features. The sales of the machine were rather abysmal in Japan. Whether or not Sony stopped production to clear some of the stock available at retail or to put an end to production entirely is not known at the moment. Many believe that this is indeed the final nail in the coffin for the machine and that Sony will not be reviving production at any time soon, if ever. Analysts blame the failure of the PSX on the high pricing of the machine when it was first launched in Japan. Sony did go on to slash the price of the machine later on, in order to make it appeal to more consumers, but Japanese consumers did not bite. Because of its "failure" in Japan, Sony decided not to launch the PSX in North American and European territories. The features of the PSX are said to be hint of what we will see with Sonys upcoming gaming machine, the PS3. Thanks to the PS3s advanced gaming capabilities, while consumers hadnt bought the PSX in droves, the opposite is expected when the PS3 sees a release in 2006.
