Nintendo boasts successful Australian DS launch

February 28th, 2005 (7:30pm) - Nintendo is boasting that the Australian Nintendo DS hardware launch has been the most successful hardware launch ever in the territory. The Nintendo DS launched in Australian this past Thursday, weeks before the dual-screened handheld’s launch in Europe on March 11th.

"The retail and consumer feedback from Thursday’s Nintendo DS launch has been astounding," said Nintendo Australia’s sales and marketing director Rose Lappin. "We are eagerly awaiting the official market sales figures this week to fully solidify our place in the Australian marketplace as the most successful current hardware launch ever."

The official sales figures for the Nintendo DS’ Australian launch are expected to be revealed this coming Wednesday by GfK, a market research firm.

Through mid-January, over 2.8 million units of the Nintendo DS have been sold through North America and Japan. Nintendo hopes to meet its target of 5 million units of the handheld sold by March 31st with next month’s European launch.
