Revolution to Feature Wireless Controller, Use Standard DVDs, and Feature Slick Design

May 13th, 2005 (4:07pm) - The New York Times has published an article about Microsoft’s upcoming next-gen videogame console, the Xbox 360, and in this article, while stating much of the information released in the past 24 hours, features some new information regarding Nintendo’s next-generation videogame console, which has been given the codename "Revolution." This new information comes straight from Nintendo’s Vice President for Corporate Affairs, Perrin Kaplan.

Kaplan has stated that Nintendo will attempt to shed its current image with the Revolution. The console is described as being "very, very sleek," as it will stand horizontally and be no taller than a stack of three DVD cases.

Surprisingly, Kaplan has confirmed that the Revolution will use standard DVD’s as its medium. However, it is unclear at the moment if the console will allow DVD playback (which seems likely).

Additionally, using the technology of the GameCube’s wireless Wave Bird controllers, the Revolution will indeed feature wireless controllers, just as the Xbox 360 will. Also, just like the Xbox 360, the Revolution will also focus on high-definition gaming with an emphasis on online play.

At the Game Developer’s Conference (GDC) in March, Nintendo President Satoru Iwata revealed that the Nintendo Revolution will go online wirelessly along with Nintendo DS handheld. He also stated that the Revolution will be backwards compatible with the GameCube, meaning that it will be able to play the GameCube’s entire library of games. And, just yesterday, Iwata-san revealed that the DS will be able to communicate with the Revolution wirelessly.

Unfortunately, the "revolutionary" aspects of the Nintendo’s next-gen console have not been revealed. Rumor has it that the console’s controllers may use gyration technology, however, nothing can be confirmed at the current time.

Nintendo plans on unveiling the Revolution at E3, but it is believed that Nintendo will withhold some information regarding the console’s "revolutionary" features. Nintendo will be conservative with the details that it reveals regarding the console, since the console’s launch window is currently scheduled for mid-2006. Nintendo wants to keep some of the console’s features under wraps so that competitors will not mimic the company’s ideas.
