Follow-up: Nintendo Releases New Revolution Info
May 13th, 2005 (9:16pm) - Nintendo today officially released some new information in regards to the information revealed by Perrin Kaplan, Nintendos Vice President for Corporate Affairs, in yesterdays New York Times article.
Nintendo has stated that the Revolution will be the smallest home game console ever created. As mentioned early, its height (when laying horizontally) will be just a bit taller than three DVD cases stacked upon one another; its length is slightly longer than a DVD case as well. Also, like the PlayStation 2, the console will be able to stand vertically and horizontally. Nintendo has also reiterated that the console will be able to play the GameCubes 8cm proprietary software as well as the consoles own 12cm optical disks "in the same self-loading media drive." This statement, leads up to believe that the console will feature a front-loading disc tray. In the news release, Nintendo also stated that the Revolution will be wireless Internet ready out of the box. This makes even more questions arise, leading us to believe (once again) that the console will have online multiplayer enabled games from the day it launches. This is an interesting tidbit since most online enabled game consoles often take a year, at least, to get their online plans into motion. However, since the Revolution will use the same online service as the DS, whos service is rumored to launch this Fall, the Revolution being playable online out-of-the-box seems plausible. The releases final statements tell us that "the combination of its compact size, wireless Internet, backward compatibility, quick start-up time and quiet, low-power operation add up to the start of a great game system." Fortunately, it seems as if the Revolution will indeed be a great gaming system, and it will be arriving sometime in 2006 (as stated in the release).
