Rumored Revolution Specs Surface

June 13th, 2005 (9:12pm) - Nintendo’s next generation videogame console, the Revolution, is easily the most mysterious of the three upcoming next-gen game consoles. We’ve seen the work-in-progress design of the console’s shell casing and know of some of its unique features, but the more important and more informative details regarding the console’s processing power and its controller are being kept tightly under wraps by Nintendo. However, a new report has surfaced onto the internet with possible technical specifications for Nintendo’s next generation console.

This latest set of specifications first appeared on blog site Nintendo Centrium and supposedly came from a programmer who is currently contracted by Nintendo to work on a Nintendo DS project. While the validity of these specs may be highly debatable, they suggest that the system will be powered by two 1.8Ghz IBM PowerPC G5 processors, a 600Mhz graphics chip from ATI and a 7.1 Digital Sound chipset. The console will also feature 128MB of high speed 1T SRAM as main memory, along with 256MB of slower DRAM, while the graphics chip has 12MB of on-board high speed RAM. 6GB proprietary DVD-size discs, designed by Panasonic, would be used for Revolution’s games.

According to Rob Fahey of GamesIndustry.biz, these latest figures, which showcase a high speed GPU and large frame buffer, lean towards a console that is geared towards hi-definition gaming. This contradicts Perrin Kaplan’s, Nintendo of America’s vice president of corporate affairs, comments last week about the Revolution not being a console focused on delivering hi-definition gaming. However, if the past is a sign of anything Nintendo is capable of, I wouldn’t rule out HD gaming for the Revolution, especially since the company has stated that the console would be compatible with PC monitors as well as standard television sets. It just all sounds fishy.

We’ll have more on the Revolution as it comes.
