New functionality for PSP hinted at by Sony exec
August 12th, 2005 (3:32pm) - Following the justr released 2.00 firmware update for the PSP which included a web browser and wireless photo sharing, Sony is now considering adding more functionalities to the console, which may include a camera.
Speaking to Famitsu, SCE software platform development boss Izumi Kawanishi has said that he is planning a new style of message application for the PSP. "Were currently considering [the implementation of an e-mail system], but we want to think over the fundamental concept behind e-mail," he commented. "We think it would be great if people could communicate together with the use of video and voice." To create video and voice for the PSP to transmit, a camera and a microphone would have to be created for use. This suggests that Sony must be considering an EyeToy style peripheral for the system. Another new functionality that is planned for the PSP in the near future is support for streaming video off the internet, which would allow users to watch movies without saving it on their Memory Stick. A system of DRM is also planned so that paid-for-content can be saved on the PSP as well. Once the DRM system is in place, more media publishers will be likely to allow their content to be distributed in a PSP-friendly way.
