Miyamoto speaks with Business Week
Super Mario Bros. inspired by Alice in Wonderland? October 31st, 2005 (5:52pm) - Shigeru Miyamoto, the infamous game designer behind hit game franchises such as Super Mario Bros. and The Legend of Zelda, recently sat down to speak a few words with Business Week regarding the controller for Nintendos upcoming next-generation game console, his inspirations for the games he develops and a handful of other topics.
When asked about what Miyamoto-san thinks the most important ingredient to his games are, he said that "the most basica element is fun." He added, "the game begins the moment a person touches a console -- everything builds from that." In regards to where the idea for the original Super Mario Bros. first came from, Miyamoto mentioned that he simply wanted to create a game with a character that bounces around and a game with a colorful blue sky backdrop. Initially, he thought Mario was too large, and then decided to shrink the character for the game, but then thought that itd be interesting if hed could grow larger. How you ask? By eating magical mushrooms, of course! "We thought of giving Mario a girlfriend, and then we started talking about Alice in Wonderland," added Miyamoto. Unfortunately Miyamoto-san did not have anything new to reveal about the Nintendo Revolution and its controller. As stated previously, Miyamoto would like to entertain a broad audience of game players with the Revolution by having a controller designed that is more easily accessible to a user than the game controllers gamers are accustomed to currently. "I also redesigned the Revolutions controller to look more like a regular TV remote, so anyone who saw it would know instantly how to use it, and so they wouldnt think they had to always stash it away," he commented. As always, well keep you posted on any new information regarding Nintendos next-generation game console, code-named Revolution.
