Miyamoto Drops Some More Tidbits

Mentions the PS3 and refining the Nintendo online experience.

March 17th, 2006 (4:52pm) - In an interview with Guardian Games Blog, Nintendo’s recently knighted Sir. Shigeru Miyamoto has admitted that Sony’s recent announcements regarding the PlayStation 3 will have an impact on Nintendo and its upcoming Revolution game console.

"Any announcement about PS3 will affect Nintendo. But we don’t see it as a competition between the two consoles, although the customers always do," said Miyamoto. "It depends on what expectations people have of the PS3 and Revolution. Sony has taken a long time to create their machine but it is obvious that the direction we are taking is different to the PS3."

Staying true to Nintendo’s new image, Miyamoto has restated that Nintendo wants to create games that appeal not only to all types of current gamers, but even those who would generally not find themselves with a gaming device in their hands.

"For a long time now we have been concerned by the direction of the industry. Our competitors are talking about beefed-up graphics and better technology. We could fight in that area but we think it is not necessary and we would rather focus on what Nintendo can do uniquely."

"We want to get a balance between powerful CPUs or beautiful graphics and making the technology comfortable and appealing. We created the DS and Revolution with this philosophy and concept in mind."

Miyamoto has also expressed that the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection will continue to improve as Nintendo and game developers become more adjusted to the service. For instance, many players have expressed distaste towards the matchmaking abilities of Mario Kart DS, but games like Metroid Prime Hunters offer a much more fleshed out set of online features, including VoIP chat.

"There are a lot of hurdles to be crossed to run an online game but we have fixed some of these, such as ease of connection and security. Now that the Nintendo wi-fi service has done so well we are ready to develop it further."

Next week at the Game Developers Conference, in his keynote address, Nintendo President Satoru Iwata is expected to discuss and reveal upcoming Nintendo products, in addition to letting the press and public feast on some new information regarding the Nintendo Revolution and its games.
