GDC 06: More PS3 Online Info
Old news confirmed, new stuff revealed. March 22nd, 2006 (10:25pm) - At GDC Phil Harrison talked about the PlayStation 3s online platform. Phil Harrison made mention of the following:
- No official name for online service yet. - The online platform will be available with the PS3 launch and includes a free basic service. - The service uses an "open philosophy" which allows developers flexibility while still being supported by a worldwide network/server infrastructure operated by SCE themselves. - The service will support third-party servers. - Will offer downloadable content and online commerce using micropayments. - Sony plans a subscription service. - Sony said the upcoming Formula One PS3 will use the new network platform. - Messages and online contact lists will appear over the game. - Video chat. - Sony is planning to send out an online SDK next week, with a final environment to be available by September.
