Revolution’s Virtual Console Not Just for Classic Games

Expect original software downloadable over Nintendo's Virtual Console service.

March 24th, 2006 (2:43pm) - In an interview with IGN, Nintendo’s Senior Director of Public Relations, Beth Llewelyn, revealed that the "Virtual Console" features of Nintendo’s next-generation game console, code-named Revolution, will also offer up new and original games available for download, in addition to a massive library of classic games.

Here’s an excerpt of the interview:

IGN: The Virtual Console is going to be home to hundreds of classic games, from the sound of it. But can we expect original games for it, too?

Beth: Yeah, and actually Mr. Iwata touched upon that briefly today - the system being a platform for developers to try out new content. So, certainly. We’ve been focused pretty heavily on the classic content and now bringing SEGA Genesis and TurboGrafx games, but it certainly will be a forum for bringing some new content.

So, there you have it, in addition to a library of NES, SNES, N64, Genesis and TG-16 games, the Revolution’s Virtual Console service will also give players the opportunity to download original titles, making the service akin to the Xbox Live Arcade service for the Xbox 360.
