Some PS3 Online Details Revealed

John Hight of SCEA Santa Monica discusses online distribution.

July 6th, 2006 (11:57pm) - John Hight of SCEA Santa Monica, who is overseeing the Playstation 3 digital distribution project discussed a few points about the goals Sony is setting forth in the project.

These are the highlights of the interview he had with Gamasutra:

- Sony intends to open up new opportunites for developers with the online distribution system, in effect "lowering the barries."

- Selling games online makes it easier to reach international and remote markets.

- Cost is lowered and eliminates the risk of inventory, as well as helping stunt used game sales as well as piracy.

- Promotes trying out new ideas in a low risk, quick feedback environment.

- Sony is committed to developing games for digital distribution within its own first-party studios, which is contrasting to how Microsoft has treated its online distribution service so far.

- Sony intends to fund development for first party games as well as being open to self-funded games.

- Sony is looking for fresh, new ideas that can use the Playstation 3 to game’s advantage.

- Sony’s first party games "couldn’t work on Xbox 360."

- Hight encourages developers interested in taking part in the project to create a high concept or a working prototype of their game, and register on Sony’s developer website.
