No DVD Playback Capable Wii in 07
Nintendo planned on launching it this year. Seriously! November 8th, 2007 (4:18pm) - Nintendo had originally intended on having DVD playback as a feature with the launch batch of Wii consoles, however, at E3 06 it was announced that the company had decided to remove the feature in order to cut hardware development costs. Well, seeing how Wii games themselves are printed on DVDs, it would seem plausible for Nintendo to offer DVD video playback on the Wii and Nintendo of Japan has recently addressed the issue on their updated Wii FAQ page.
A rough translation of the Q and A portion of the page claims that a DVD playback hardware revision had originally been scheduled for release in the second half of 2007 but in order to meet demand of the current model, Nintendo has decided to focus on producing one SKU instead of adding another to their catalog. It is currently unknown as to when Nintendo will ever release a Wii DVD SKU. Reported by Elias Dounis on November 8th, 2007 (4:18pm)
