E3 2008: Nintendo Conference Summary

Nintendo’s conference was heavy on games intended to make the world smile.

July 17th, 2008 (8:20am) - Nintendo’s press conference housed a few surprises, though none were quite the "megaton" that the company’s biggest fans were hoping for.

The most intriguing announcement actually came before the conference, with the reveal of the Wii MotionPlus. The attachment will sit on the bottom of the remote and allow for exact tracking of the user’s arm.

This device was showcased at the event with Wii Sports Resort, and the two will be packaged together. Three games were revealed for Wii Sports Resort (though more are expected), including Jet Skiing, Frisbee Throwing and Sword Fighting.

Animal Crossing: City Folk was shown. The Wii title will allow players to leave their village to visit a city that house various shops, including a salon that can turn your character into a Mii. The game will make use of a new peripheral called WiiSpeak, which is a microphone that picks up the audio from the whole room.

The company revealed that Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars will be coming to the Nintendo DS. The game will be set in Liberty City and feature a free-roaming environment.

Wii Music was demonstrated with the help of Shigeru Miyamoto and a crazy drummer. The game will offer over 50 instruments to play around with. The drums make use of the balance board for pedals, and the Wii remote and nunchuck for drum sticks.

Other titles were shown. For the Wii we saw Rayman Raving Rabbids: TV Party, Call of Duty: World At War, Star Wars: The Clone Wars -- Lightsaber Duels and Shaun White Snowboarding, which White demonstrated on-stage.

For the DS we saw Guitar Hero: On Tour -- Decades, Pokemon Rangers: Shadow of Almia and Spore Creatures (which will be the only non-PC Spore release at first). The company also announced they’ll be bringing the DS cookbook to the states, as well as a program for people who fly (in a plane, dummy). It will list flight times, resturant locations and other helpful information.
