The sheen is starting to dull on Nintendo’s Wii console with a significant drop in sales from the previous year. In Japan the console racked up sales of 210,000 this between April and June versus 530,000 for the same period last year. Sales in the United States fared just as poorly with 880,000 units sold the quarter versus 2.5 million a year prior.

The Nintendo DS didn’t take quite the beating, even rising to 610,000 from 580,000 units in Japan. The story wasn’t as positive in America however with sales dipping by 200,000 units for the quarter from 2.71 million units to 2.51 million units.

Nintendo has blamed fluctuations in the global currency market for sales woes.
