-GameTime-
Four games down the line, its pretty clear that SmackDown! 4 was never going to be wholly original. What it does, though, is add so may more features youve never seen. There are brand new wrestlers from the NWO faction and from the WCW/ECW crossover last year, complete with their own moves and alliances to deal with. There are new arenas - including a stunning-looking Madison Square Garden - along with 14 pay-per-views including Backlash and Vengeance, as well as the UK-exclusive Rebellion event. The game looks a whole lot nicer than it did before too. New character models with infinitely more detail and more realistic expressions than those in Just Bring It! will pop your eyes from your head and the brand new Titan Tron, with enhanced video and entrance footage, will make them explode in a sticky shower before they even hit the floor. The biggest improvement to the action will be found in the Career Mode. Just for starters weve seen Hell In A Cell cage matches, crazy teeter-tottering ladder action, as well as backstage interviews and angry confrontations that have been expanded too and there should be more routes through to the championship belts, making for a more freeform and unpredictable experience.
The overall premise of Shut Your Mouth’s gameplay is pretty similar to previous installments; however, there have been a few things that have been refined and tweaked in the play mechanics, and this will play into the liking of many peoples interest. The grapple system in earlier installments of the series was quite easy to execute and made the game a fast-paced, offensive-driven one, which many complained about. Yuke’s has listened to its fans and tweaked the grapple-system so that grappling is much harder to execute, since the wrestlers can no longer reach out as far. In addition, counterattacks can be made once an opponent fails in an attempt to grapple you. This facet of play makes the game a much slower, strategy-oriented game that depicts the matches on TV with more accuracy. The wrestlers will also have a vast move-set, and players can now pull off combos according to their real-life counterparts’. Furthermore, double- and triple-team moves will also be included, mainly for some of the larger matches. Another new feature that’s been implemented involves better weapon usage, and it makes the use of them even more deadly, but more importantly, they now work more realistically. When a superstar has a weapon in his hand and grapples an opponent, there will be a specific animation according to which weapon that wrestler is holding. A table, for example, will make your wrestler set it down, put the opponent on top, and then proceed to an offensive move -- all in one smooth animation. A chair will set up a DDT where the opponent is then driven into it on the mat. This usage of weapons is always taken advantage of on TV, but never before has it really taken full effect in a video game, until now.
-Outlook-
Shut Your Mouth is undoubtedly a hugely anticipated title, and the sport of wrestling is so multi-faceted that developers really have their hands full when trying to make a video game rendition. Yuke’s latest endeavor into the squared-circle looks quite promising. And after all the crappy WWE games thats currently on our consoles. Im praying this game will be as good as it sounds. Sure I know it wont be as great as the N64 WWF series. But me and the rest of the WWE gaming world still must have it. But until its Nov. 11th release. Sit back, relax and SHUT YOUR MOUTH!!!!
