Basic Info: 1-2 Players
Memory Card: 71KB
Characters: Preytor, Congar, Robo-47, Ultra V, Agamo, Magmo, Togera, Kineticlops.
Basic Gameplay: You play as a giant Godzilla-like monster duking it out with other monsters in city settings. It’s in essence a GIANT figher.

Made by the people that brought you Twisted Metal: Black, War of the Monsters promises to be one of 2003’s greats. It’s a revolutionary game that combines classic 2D Monster Fighters (like Rampage) with modern party fighters(like Super Smash Bros.) and 3D fighters(like Tekken, Virtua Fighter, Capcom fighters etc.). It so revolutionary I almost dare say that it will create its own genre that’s entirely new to games.
This game boasts some of the most amazing scenery interaction and great cameras. In the early version I’ve played the camera is always where you want it to be which is something many games lack today.
The scenery interaction is probably my very favorite part of this innovative beast. While fighting you can pick up anything from an oil tanker to a helicopter or radio tower. You can hurl them at your opponents or beat them with the objects. You can even pick up your opponents and toss them across the level into buildings causing a very satisfying explosion of dust and debris. As you play the game the entire world you play in slowly turns more and more into one flat field. But you have to be careful when destroying buildings, they can even fall on you, ending the match! The scenery allows every match to be a little different and creates a huge replay value.
The controls are another of the perfect features of this game. They are very simple, but still allow plenty of variety. With one button (O) that controls three major functions: climbing, picking up, and throwing you can generally count on simple controls. It’s no button masher, but there aren’t any huge combo chains to remember to do cool moves.
The gameplay is more fun than any fighter I’ve ever played. And I’ve only played the trimmed down demo game. I’ve seriously spent hours playing a very basic version of this game, but it’s been a blast! Did I mention that it’s fun? This game moves along nearly flawless and the action never stops unless you want it to.
The graphics aren’t perfect, but they’re not anything to laugh at either. This early version probably isn’t all the way up to the level the actual game will have, but they’re not looking too bad now. I wouldn’t expect it to be a masterpiece and beautiful eye candy. I think they were going for more of a cartoony look so as to appeal to kids too.

All-in-all this game should be an amazing one that starts a chain of games completely different than ever before. I’m so glad someone finally gave me giant sized action that allows me to be VERY destructive! I dare say this will be one of the best of 2003.
