”Imagination is more important than knowledge.” -- Albert Einstein

Those few words are so true. The imagination is the only thing on the planet that can produce new, fresh, creative ideas. From what you eat for dinner to the videogames you play. They are all at sometime inspired by imagination. Konami’s legendary game designer Hideo Kojima and his team in Japan have put together a very impressive resume over the years, producing games that span multiple consoles and the PC. One specific title however stands out from all the others and has been a favorite of gamers and critics alike since its release in 1999. That game came along with more imagination than any game I know to date. You guessed it Metal Gear Solid! Metal Gear Solid went on to be one of the biggest selling titles on the Sony Playstation and met with much critical acclaim. Followed by the sequel subtitled “Sons of Liberty”, the Metal Gear name managed to sell PS2 systems even before the title was playable, and sold more than just a few copies of “Zone of the Enders” when a playable demo of Snake’s latest adventure come packaged with the newest Kojima project. Now after the disappointment of “Sons of Liberty” and the mixed feeling of MGS3: Snake Eater comes a guaranteed excellent experience Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes. A remake of the original PSone classic.

When the game was first announced gamers nationwide thought is was a possible spoof. Nintendo & Konami working together on an exclusive MGS for GameCube? Not even to be ported to PS2 down the line? And if that wasn’t unbelievable enough. It was a real shocker when we learned it was being developed by Nintendo’s Silicon Knights. Makers of the excellent but underrated Eternal Darkness. But as Kurt Angle would say “It’s True It’s Damn True!” For those living under a rock for the last 10 years Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes thrusts players into a world of espionage and stealth action. Playing as legendary videogame hero, Solid Snake, gamers will infiltrate an Alaskan nuclear missile disposal facility occupied by a terrorist organization called FOXHOUND. While the mission is simple – infiltrate the base, seize the terrorist cell and neutralize the weapons of mass destruction, a.k.a., Metal Gear, it is the gameplay that is unforgettable. Only in this game will players truly feel like they are in the heart of the action, as if every step taken leads them closer to danger. Metal Gear Solid The Twin Snakes is an exercise in stealth maneuvers, covert operations and special ops. The complex has been overtaken by the forces of Liquid Snake, Solid Snake’s arch-nemesis and ex-comrade in arms who is bent on bringing the world’s governments to their knees. The player’s goal to slip undetected into the complex undetected, disarm the weapons of mass destruction and ultimately confront Liquid Snake himself.

Rather than being an all-out firefight from start to finish, like a lot of current action games Metal Gear Solid places an emphasis on stealth, cunning and strategy. In this game, being able to avoid detection by your enemies is just as important to succeeding as how well you can shoot. Hiding in shadows, crawling though air ducts and strategically placing remote-controlled mines are crucial to survival here. Of course, that doesn’t mean that weapons don’t play an important role in the game. Metal Gear Solid’s designers have gone to extreme measures to ensure that the game’s firearms are as true to life as possible. At any given time, Solid Snake has a veritable smorgasbord of weapons at his disposal, ranging from simple Berettas to futuristic rifles. Snake also has access to enough high-tech gadgets to make his way to the final battle on top of RAY. Magnetic mines, hovering remote-controlled cameras and night vision goggles all play important roles in the game.

  • A shot to the gut is much better than a shot to the nuts !

There are some people who will write Twin Snakes off as “just another remake.” Well ok it is but that’s not at all a bad thing. Those who will dismiss Twin Snakes as a lame upgraded port is insane. Well ok there is a scientific name for them “criminally stupid.” That reminds me of another quote from good’ol Albert Einstein ”Only two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity, and I’m not sure about the former." Twin Snakes is the original vision of what the PSone version was going to be. From video to audio to overall presentation Twin Snakes is the perfect upgrade to one of if not greatest games ever. Like Capcom’s Resident Evil remake, Twin Snakes has been completely redone graphically. The original game had blurry textures and un-detailed character models, because of the limited technology available at the time, Twin Snakes features improved texture work and very detailed and animated character models. And due to new gameplay elements Mr. Kojima promises that all boss fights will be fresh and different from the original. I would kill just to have Psycho Mantis call me a very “Methodical” man again.

    Outlook…
As an extremely hardcore Legend of Zelda fan it’s almost impossible to stop me from playing a current Zelda release. But it damn sure happened. While I was deep into N64’s Ocarina of Time (my personal favorite of all time) I heard buzz about Solid Snake’s return to the videogame realm. So I picked MGS up thinking I won’t play it until I was done with Zelda. But I was wrong. One night after finishing the water temple I decided to pop MGS in. A few seconds later I was submerged in this world where fantasy & reality blended in so perfectly. And I didn’t play Zelda for a whole 3 days. In that time I beat MGS for the first time and all I had to do is give up sleep for 72 hours. To experience it again with any sort of upgrades is a major blessing for me. Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes is the perfect game for MGS newbies and veterans alike. And it’s so far my only “must have” title of 2003. There’s only one thing left to say ”See you in hell Liquid.”
