Super Friend powers activate! With the success of the X-Men Legends games and the advent of Activision’s upcoming Marvel Ultimate Alliance, DC needed a title that would similarly capture the interest of the gaming world, but this time for fans of Superman’s world. Enter Justice League Heroes for the PS2 and Xbox.

The Justice League is a team of DC’s Earth’s Mightiest Heroes. Superman, Batman, The Flash, Green Lantern, and Wonder Woman among others will be playable in this title. If you’ve played an X-Men Legends game you’ll be in familiar territory. The setup is almost exactly the same. It’s a four player, team-based, action extravaganza. You’re set to the task of developing strategic combinations of your fellow league members that best complete various mission objectives and clobber enemies.

The power system allows you to choose your characters special abilities and easily access and execute them with a simple pop-up menu brought up by pressing L1 (or L on Xbox). Powers include Superman’s icy breath, a flurry combo by The Flash, and a containment field created by the Green Lantern’s ring that traps enemies. In addition to the power moves you’ll be able to perform the standard punching, kicking, and jumping you’d expect from a brawler. Characters that can fly in the comics also have the option to do so.

There was no immediate indication as to which of DC Mightiest Villains would be making appearances, but you can bet Lex Luthor, The Joker, and Darkseid will be involved. The game maintains a smooth pace when playing with two or fewer people, but when three or four are playin, coordinating an efficient attack becomes difficult. Some party members can stray and draw the overhead camera in opposite directions causing others to become trapped in corners or lose focus of their enemy.

This game’s strong point will be the action. Explosions, throwing cars, and smashing enemies to bits provides fans with the whole experience of what it feels like to fight like their favorite DC superheroes. Fans should rest assured that X-Men Legends and Justice League Heroes share many likenesses even though they were developed by Raven Software and Snowblind Studios respectively. Both are extremely capable with the genre so it’s not surprise that Justice League Heroes plays solidly. Fans should rest assured and know they’re in for a treat. This game continues a long standing friendly rivalry between the two comic giants and the similarities at least guarantee a playable adventure with a lot of fan service.
