Introduction

The return of Nintendo’s biggest stars in the sequel to the N64 hit Super Smash Bros. Are back in the form of Super Smash Bros Melee for your Nintendo GameCube. Mario, Link & Pikachu comes back with even more friends to punch & kick across the screen just for your enjoyment. Developed by Hal Laboratory, inc SSBM is all Nintendo fanboys dream.

Presentation

If you think this is just a rehash of the N64 game think again. SSBM contains so many modes & options besides when you’re fighting it’s like a completly diffrent game.

One-Player Mode has many ways to play. Regular Match has Classic mode that’s much like the first Super Smash Bros. & Adventure mode is where you play more stages all with diffrent types of matches. You also play new versions of old Nintendo game stages like Mario Bros for NES. There’s a Event match mode with 51 events with diffrent objectives for you to complete. Next a Stadium mode that has Target Test, Home-Run Contest & Multi-Man Melee. There is also a Training mode.

Vs. Mode has Melee, Tournament Melee & Special Melees. All of these modes can be played the way you want by using the options in Custom Rules.

There is also Trophies, Options & Data menus.

Graphics & Sound

GRAPHICS:
From charcters to backrounds SSBM is perfect Mario never looked this good. The charcters are great from head to foot. You could see Pikachu eyes water up as Mario punches him in the head, you can see the fur on Star Fox, even the Triforce engraved in Links sword. Lighting effects are great as you shoot, slash & bash your way to victory. The 3D backrounds are crisp and on some stages interact with your match. When it comes to looks SSBM has it all.

SOUND:
Thank Nintendo for these optical disc. Every punch & kick is followed by a nice grunt, scream or cry. Also all the classic Nintendo tunes sounds better than ever.

Gameplay

Super Smash Bros. Melee plays much like the N64 version but has alot of extra stuff that sets the two apart.

1 Player Classic mode is best played when you are by yourself and have the urge to play the game. The Adventure mode takes more work but just as fun as classic. With more stages, diffrent boss & Old Nintendo stages re-made to play spending much time here is a must. Ok now on to the best new thing in SSBM Event mode. Event mode has you compete in special matches with diffrent objectives to complete to finish the stages and trust me it’s no walk in the park.

Vs. Mode ok this is about where 75% of the fun of SSBM is at. Better with friends but still great if you play alone puts you in the best four player action on any platform. You can also play every vs. match the way you want to. Go to custom rules and change stuff like game mode Stock, Time, Coin or Bonus. You can also pick what items can be used and how often that item showes up while you play. Try turning of all items but pokeballs to have a pokemon battle. There also is a tournament mode with up to 64 players & a list of special melees.

Lasting Appeal

There’s a ton of things to do in SSBM from unlocking charcters, stages and the new trophy gallery where you unlock trophy after trophy from every mode in the game. With almost 3 hundred of them to collect this game will last a long time. And the best thing about it is that while you unlock every thing the game stays fun. Put all of that with the multi-player fun makes replay value heaven.

Conclusion

All in all Super Smash Bros. Melee is the game to have for you GameCube owners. The game lacks in nothing but the fact that there’s 100 other Nintendo charcters that would be great in the game. Some hardcore fighting fans will over look this as a great fighter but this is no regular fighter. It’s in a genre of it’s own. If you have a GameCube you should have this game.
