Introduction

Originally planned as the fourth installment of the mucho popular Resident Evil series, Devil May Cry has taken in all of the elements that made the RE games good and thrown out all of the boring aspects. It’s hard to explain exactly what to expect from this game in words, but if I had to I would say its Castlevaina crossed with Soul-reaver, with a touch of Tomb Raider.

Presentation

There is not much special here, menus and everything are about the same as you can expect from any Resident Evil game. However a nice feature is the ability to save any time you want. Don’t be fooled you will still have to start the level over from the beginning, however you get to keep any items you had when you saved.

Graphics & Sound

This is the first of many PS2 games that will make you just stop and look at the amazingly beautiful environments. The player starts off in a castle, progressing through a coliseum, deep into caves, on a pirate ship, and all the way down to the underworld itself. Each location is wonderfully detailed. I must admit boss battles are great, as good as those seen in Orphen, if not better. Also I have saw minimal “jaggies” unless you count Dante’s hair during some of the cut scenes. On the side of sound you have a very broad range of music from the slow eerie music of the underworld to the upbeat raging music that prepares you for one hell of a fight. This is probably one of the first titles from Capcom that many would consider to have good voice acting. Its not annoying and it brings you into the story.

Gameplay

Can you say Combo? Well if you can I think we have found a game for you. You have at your disposal a mighty sword as well as a gun of your choice. One of our personally favorites is taking the sword launching the demon into the air then pumping it full of lead before it hits the ground in a million pieces. When you kill a demon you gain different abilities via the red orbs you receive after each creature is killed. After you gain your first new sword you will have the devil meter which when filled up gives you the ability to transfer into devil mode, or a state of extreme power, increasing your speed, attack, and defense skills. There are numerous enemies in the game. Expect to do battle with Marionettes, Lizard men, Deaths, Griffons, Giant Spiders, A Giant Blob and more.
This is defiantly what I expected resident evil should have been all along.

Lasting Appeal

All of your collected skills as well as items do pass over to your next game after you complete it. So you can actually stand a chance on the higher difficulty level. There are 23 missions and 12 secret missions to complete. You can defiantly expect to be playing this one for a long time.

Conclusion

This is the best action game for the PS2 so far, as we have yet to see what MGS2 will offer. It is one of the few games this holiday season worth spending your money on. Defiantly worth a look.
